Have you ever felt intimidated by someone?

I am not talking about a bully with large biceps and a mean scowl.

Nope.

When I coach individuals, I’ll find that many feel intimated or uncomfortable around individuals who are more successful or popular:

It could be:

- Their manager

- A celebrity

- Someone they are romantically attracted to.

- A company owner or wealthy person

- Etc

How about you? Do these types intimate you?

Do you feel at a loss as to how to talk with them?

If so, remember this line from Larry King.

“Everyone puts their pants on in the morning one leg at a time.”

In other words, we are 90%+ alike. Every person deals with the same basic human emotions. No matter what your position in life, we all have to get dressed, wash our face, and deal with life’s details.

Recognize the other person is just like us in many ways. Then you can have a great conversation. Especially if you use the tips from the Conversation Success System

My young daughter is chowing down on a banana. When she finishes, she’ll be ready for some attention. I’ll make this quick.

A week ago my wife, daughter and I headed into the local grocery store. Checking us out was a blond, medium height, young lady.

She looked sad. Her normally pretty face showed she had been through a rough day.

Checkout clerks have a challenging task. For 8+ hours they stand there, doing the same tasks, trying to be cheerful, and make others happy.

Evidently this clerk’s tank of gas had run out.

My wife and I immediately engaged her in conversation and laughed and joked with her using techniques from the 4 Conversation Tips of the Rich and Famous.

By the time we were done she was cheerful and we felt good because we had brightened her day.

Do you brighten the day of people around you? Or are you like a dark cloud that people see coming and seek to hide from.

Spread the joy through good conversation skills.

My daughter is calling,

It’s 4:00 in the afternoon and I am standing near the front of the retail store where I worked in college.

The door rings as it opens. Two men stride one. One tall and other short and stout. They looked to be in a rotten mood. In fact I would have preferred to push a button and be whisked away.

Since these buttons have not been invented yet, I approached the tall one.

I cheerfully said, “Hello Sir, how can I help you?”

He paused. Made eye contact and said, “What are you so happy about?”

I froze and realized I made a mistake that could ruined any chance of conversation success.

Here is the Rule:

Match the mood of the other person.

If you are feeling great, do you enjoy it when a person has an attitude that rains on your parade?

Or if you are feeling a little depressed do you want to talk to someone who is on top of the world?

No, its downright irritating. The answer is to match the mood of other person as described in the Conversation Success System.

Back to the fateful day.

I was taken back and said in a calm sympathetic voice, “Things are going well. How can I help you.”

By matching Their mood I was able to salvage the conversation.

Today, match the mood of the people you talk with.
