I'll often followup with mentioning someone else I know who has the same name, "John, I have a good friend named John who lives in CA."

Every person has one subject they usually enjoy talking about. It's themselves. Ask questions and show interest in their life. This is one key having good dating conversation topics. Show interest in your partner by asking various questions.

Steer the conversation towards topics of their life you are interested in. If you are bored to death with sports, don’t ask about their favorite teams.

Seek to avoid asking questions that are too personal. The other person may start to resent you as none of us want too personal of questions!

I learned very quickly that I could sell more if I made friends with customers. I would show interest, listen, and be friendly. Not only did I build good relationships, but my sales went up.

My friend men a guy online. They started the relationship and it was going very smoothly. Then they met and she found that the guy was not who he said he was. Because he put on a front, a friendship started but could not continue.

If you try to make friends online, be yourself and hope they are being themselves.

We do want to put our best foot forward, but don’t deceive others.

Friendships are based finding and doing things in common. Find things in common with your co-workers, customers, school friends.

This technique alone will work wonders for you! You will stand out from the crowd. Customers will want to come back. When a customer sees that you are glad to have them buy from you, they will want to come back and buy MORE from YOU.

You have probably realized that puppies make friends very easily. When they greet a person they smile, wag their tail and are absolutely happy to see you. They want to be your friend. The result is that you in turn want to pet the puppy, and be the puppies friend. This same principal works with you social contacts. Be glad to see them and they will usually be glad to see you. You will make a good impression and they will like you.

A note of caution.

Do not be overly enthused to see someone. This can drive people away. Don't violate their comfort zone and pay attention to their mood. If they are in a happy mood, you can be more expressive. If they are in a sour mood, keep your energy down, but still express you are glad to see them.

If you know how to read English, read books out loud. I heard of one guy who came to the US and wanted to improve his English speaking. Every night he would read aloud from a book. This not only improved his English reading skills but also helped improve the clarity of what he was saying.

Usually when a person struggles with carrying on a conversation it can be due to four reasons.

What do you enjoy about… (Your job, this party, the day,  etc)

What is your dream job or occupation?

What has been one of the best vacations you have been on?

What did you enjoy about college?

What were some good childhood memories?

How did you get started at your job, etc?

What influenced your decision to move or live here?

Day 3]]> Dating can be fun, but also a little awakard if you run out of things to talk about on a date. Today’s question comes from a reader who asks:

"My question is about dating. I’m not sure if it’s because I’m dating someone who doesn’t have much in common or is it just I don’t know what to talk about on a date..? What do you suggest?"

When I was single (and before I upgraded my conversation skills), I experienced a few dates with some awakard silence. What’s the answer?

A couple ideas.

First, great friendships and relationships are based on common interests and connections. Just something to keep in mind as you go forward with your relationship. Keep searching for common interests.

However, you cane definelty improve the conversations on the dates.

What to talk about on a date?

Before a date, think of 5 questions you can ask and 5 fun facts you can share.  When I say fun facts, think of something interest that has happened to you lately or something else you think your date might be interested in.

As the date progresses, just start working through these.

When your date is talking listen for conversation nuggets.

If your date says, "I played volleyball in highschool".

Take the nugget and say, "Cool, what did you enjoy about it?:"

This will keep the conversation going.

"I feel pretty shy around girls. There are times when I want to talk to them, but not sure what to say. What conversation tips do you for me?"

Hello Sam,

Sorry to hear about your struggle. There are several moments in my life where I can remember being in your situation and too shy to talk to a girl.

I do have some good news for you! Many guys have had the same struggles (many still do), but were able to break free and build meaningful relationships.

Here are some tips to starting conversations with Girls.

First, remember that the person you feel shy about talking to, is another human being also. They likely struggle with some shyness and would probably feel flattered if someone came up and talked to them. Don’t be intimated.

Second, Act confident. Put a smile on and have good posture.

Third, Start with a simple Hi. After Hi, ask a good question that will start a conversation. If you are at a party, ask, "What do you enjoy about the party." Most questions will work.

Then Listen. Nod your head, ask questions, and show interest. If a guy listens, girls will enjoy talking with them.

There’s more, but start with this. Remember they are human, act confident and smile, and finally walk up, Say "Hi", and ask a question.
