There are two parts:

1. Say something like…

"I heard something about you the other day."
"I noticed something about you."
"When I saw you with that customer, something came to mind."

You instantly have their attention.

Now apply part two.

2. Give a truthful, positive comment.

"Mark was saying he was impressed with you work performance."
"I noticed how fast you were at ________. Good job."
"When I saw you talking with that person, I was reminded of how good you are with customers."
