We were the honored guests. Great, but at first no one approached us to start a conversation. That did not bother me much. However, based on past experience the reason was simple. Individuals were either shy or did not know what to say.

What should you say when you first meet someone?

Here is what I did.

Me: Hi, my name is Austin.

Other Person: Hello, I am John.

Me: Nice to meet you. This is my first time here. How long have you been coming to these events.

Simple, but effective. What if they just reply with "Hi"? Just ask, "Whats your name?"

I'll often followup with mentioning someone else I know who has the same name, "John, I have a good friend named John who lives in CA."
